Writing to the Government expressing my concerns about Surrey County Council's plans to suspend May elections
I have written to the Government, alongside my 5 fellow Surrey Liberal Democrat MPs , to express my deep concerns regarding Surrey County Council's plans to suspend May elections. This is an appalling attempt by the Conservatives to cling onto power despite failures by Surrey on children, financial management and stewardship of our area. After decades of Conservative rule, residents must be able to elect leaders and give them a mandate to take forward devolution, not those who may design it around their own ambitions. And planning new authorities takes time and needs to involve many stakeholders - it must not be rushed - for residents we need to get it right.
In Parliament I asked the Minister whether the Government planned to ignore the health and noise impact of a third runway at Heathrow on my constituents. Eight air routes currently cross Esher and Walton and noise is a constant problem.
